About Michelle Spencer
I'm Michelle Spencer and I'm running for Owyhee County Commissioner, District 3.
I am a native Idahoan, and my family goes generations back in Owyhee County. I was raised across the river and went to school in South Nampa. After my husband and I started our family we began moving west, a little bit at a time. When our daughter started school we quickly realized that we wanted her school experience to have that hometown feel. So, we moved to Marsing. Well technically we moved to Melba, but it's the "Marsing/Melba/Givens" zone that confuses everyone. If you know you know.
We quickly fell in love with who we were in Owyhee County. Yes, we love the county, but really it's the people, it's the lifestyle, it's what you learn and who you become. The community is unmatched.
Up to this point I have spent my time managing businesses and teams. Running or assisting in administrative duties for many different departments. I am knowledgeable in county codes, and land use. I believe in practicing "inspect what you expect" and developing reporting systems that help navigate expectations. I work with many different business professionals every day including other government offices. I am a professional that is ready to take that knowledge and skill set to Owyhee County.
My biggest motivation to run for Commissioner is our counties future and what will remain for our children. Owyhee County has outdated policies and practices that have started to hurt the citizens. If we aren't one step ahead, we are behind. The demographic of Owyhee County is changing. There are a lot of people who have spent their whole lives here and are now moving across the river, not because they want to, but because they have to. Whether it's due to lack of jobs, or lack of homes in the area, it is happening. I understand that there is a huge distaste to growth, but what will you think when it's your next generation that isn't here? A generation in your family that doesn't get to show livestock at the fair, or participate in the traditions we all took part in. When you stop seeing new Christmas noodle trees being brought home for the holidays (do the other schools do noodle trees or just Marsing Elementary?). By not planning ahead, or not planning at all, we are causing the shift in our community. Planning, community outreach, listening ears and thoughtful minds are needed to keep the Owyhee County we know and love.
While you look through my website I'm going to talk about a lot of things. I have a voice and an audience until May 21st, and I am going to use this opportunity to share my opinion and always include how I would find a resolution as your Owyhee County Commissioner.
If I don't win Owyhee County Commissioner, I hope that the people who sit in the seat this year and next year take a chance to listen to my words and start being a proactive leader for our community. To realize that commissioner isn't just a title right now, it isn't just a 'mostly Monday' job. There is work to be done. There are things that need to change so Owyhee County can stay the same and not continue to fall behind. Not just for our future, not just our children's futures, but for the entire county, the county we all call home.
Thank you for being here.
Sincerely,
Michelle Spencer
